NFTs With A Cause? Galactic Gorrillae are on a mission
What exactly is an NFT?
Officially, the description is very dull:
A non-fungible token is a non-interchangeable unit of data stored on a blockchain, a form of digital ledger. Types of NFT data units may be associated with digital files such as photos, videos, and audio. Because each token is uniquely identifiable, NFTs differ from blockchain cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin. – Wikipedia
Snooze City!

Basically, it’s like owning a real piece of art with a sticker on the back that proves it’s the only one. You could take a photo of the painting or even buy a print, but the value stays with the original one. Now make all of that a digital piece of artwork. It’s worth a bit of money, and some are going for life-changing amounts.
What’s really cool about NFTs and decentralized projects are the opportunities it brings to those who traditionally may have been without opportunity.

Are NFTs bad for the environment?
Via CBS News: “The growing awareness of NFTs’ environmental impact comes as evidence piles up about the harmful toll of crypto technology.
Annually, Ethereum is currently estimated to consume roughly 44.94 terawatt-hours of electrical energy, which is comparable to the yearly power consumption of countries like Qatar and Hungary. It is responsible for about 21.35 metric tons of carbon dioxide released each year, comparable to the carbon footprint of Sudan.
The amount of electricity that mining Bitcoin consumes in one year is equal to that used to power Malaysia, Sweden or Ukraine, according to the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index. In a recent study, scientists warned Bitcoin alone could push the Earth’s temperature 2 degrees Celsius above historical levels, if it were to become as widely adopted as other new technologies.”
How is Galactic Gorrilæ different?
I spoke to one of their team and he shared that “The Galactic Gorrilæ are on a mission to educate people on the benefit and growth opportunity for Solana as a market. The team behind these pieces of collectable digital artwork is using this NFT project to fuel their PetGas project turning Plastic into Fuel so they can then sell this to gas stations under LLC. In turn, all holders will have a piece of revenue.”

These pieces and more are going to ‘mint’ on Feb 19th (currently in production) but there’s a very excited group on the Discord platform getting ready to support a great cause and having fun while doing it.
The team even hosts a weekly beach cleanup.

I’m sure there’s more to come, but it’s fascinating to see how entrepreneurial teams are thinking beyond the quick buck that can be made on digital artwork and collectables and transforming the projects to benefit the world around them. It’s a great case of using the short-term to benefit the long-term.
