The Metaverse Game-Changers: Headsets, Currency, and Walmart

Hello, I’m a huge nerd and am suuuuper excited about this next stage of the human experience. The blending of ‘real’ life and the unlimited digital world is coming fast under the name ‘Metaverse’.

The Metaverse Game-Changers

What is the MetaVerse?

The MetaVerse is a digital world where you and others can interact with others across the world, play games, share documents, purchase products, and more. Living in the future is just a headset away. I’ve already written a little about how to keep kids safe in the ever-evolving Metaverse and social communities in whichever fashion comes next.

We all heard cyborg/human and controlling shareholder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerborg tell us that they’re changing the name of Facebook to Meta. Not only does that give them more room to invest in the Metaverse without confusing people with the old Facebook brand, but since everyone will be talking about the virtual spaces, the trademarks ‘Meta’ and ‘Metaverse’ will be worth a mint.

Shopping In AR -VR
Shop faster and more effectively online with VR. Purchase your favourite brands online using Cryptocurrencies or USD with secure payment portals.

Even companies like Walmart are getting ready for the new world and investing in their own NFTs, shopping experiences and crypto currencies.

According to CNBC “The big-box retailer filed several new trademarks late last month that indicate its intent to make and sell virtual goods, including electronics, home decorations, toys, sporting goods and personal care products. In a separate filing, the company said it would offer users a virtual currency, as well as NFTs.”

In a statement, Walmart said it is “continuously exploring how emerging technologies may shape future shopping experiences.” It declined to comment on the specific trademark filings.

“We are testing new ideas all the time,” the Walmart spokesperson said. “Some ideas become products or services that make it to customers. And some we test, iterate, and learn from.”

Once again, the race to the mainstream is on and it’s already a thrilling battle. One of the early stand-outs is Lexvor, the mobile network service provider that is being developed, the World’s first cellular AR and VR headset. This will give the user the option of connecting anywhere and being part of the Metaverse whether using their phone’s data or connecting to a WiFi hotspot including your home network without wires.

What will be the official Metaverse currency?

The truth is, we don’t know. It may be regular payments through whichever credit card you’ve got hooked up to your profile, just like buying games on your Xbox, or it may be entirely done through cryptocurrency.

Since it’s probable that the Metaverse won’t have countries as we do on regular old Earth, and it will be more of a community-based system, a decentralized banking system should follow suit, which is where cryptocurrencies will come in.

I personally use WealthSimple to manage my cryptocurrency wallet, though there are plenty of options out there.

As well as the ever-popular Bitcoin (BTC), Etherium (ETH), and Litecoin (LTC), other possible stand-outs could include:

MANA: MANA is the native cryptocurrency on Decentraland, a virtual world where users can own land and interact with other users. It can be used to buy parcels of land, avatars, and “wearables” like clothing and accessories. Since Decentraland is a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), owning MANA also gives you the ability to vote on certain aspects of the game, like policy updates and NFT auctions. You can buy MANA on crypto exchanges Binance, Kraken and Gate.io.

SAND: The crypto used on metaverse platform The Sandbox, SAND serves as a similar function to MANA. It can be used to sell assets as NFTs on The Sandbox’s marketplace, buy land and play games. You can buy SAND on exchanges like Binance, Huobi, WazirX and UPbit.

AXS: AXS is the cryptocurrency for the popular gaming platform Axie Infinity. Players can buy this cryptocurrency in crypto exchanges, but they can also earn AXS tokens by breeding digital pets called Axis, which are unique NFTs that can also be used to compete in matches and tournaments. You can buy AXS on Binance, Coinbase, Gemini and more.

And then there are always the Memecoins like DogeCoin and the newer Shiba Inu coin, which is incredibly cheap to buy but may turn into nothing. Of course, there are rumours of Amazon launching payment in a number of crypto coins including SHIB. Just the other day, Elon Musk announced that you could buy Tesla merchandise with Dogecoin, so why not?

2022 is going to be a huge year for both hardware and software creators, with everything from smart glasses that let us see an augmented layer on our own reality, to sound design for making the virtual world more believable. Stay tuned, you know there’s a whole lot more to come!

I’m not 100% ready, but I can see how shopping in the metaverse would be super helpful and easy to do.

That’s a really interesting thought, Miranda. I guess if everything is picked virtually, it might come from a warehouse or better yet, directly from the farm.

Wow! It will be interesting to see what the next decade will bring. This reminds me of the book “Ready Player One”.

So, like Second Life or The Sims, but more immersive. It’ll be interesting to see whether it’s a passing fad or it’s something that’s going to stick, like crypto and NFTs.

Oh I think it’s going to be the future, especially as the headsets become smaller, or AR-enabled glasses become more common.
