Since moving here to beautiful British Columbia, I’ve been on a few pretty special road trips. While they haven’t been the longest, driving six hours seems like a pretty long trip to me.

The road trip that broke our old Ford Focus

As soon as you drive north or east of Vancouver, you get to the mountains. These aren’t just any mountains, but some of the most beautiful mountains in the world. To the North-west, there’s the Sea-to-Sky highway up to Whistler, winding between the the sea and the jagged edges of the snow-peaked province. Or we can head south, straight into the US to explore Washington state and then down into the wonderful Oregon. If you’re going due-east, then there’s the whole country to explore.

Driving through the mountains to Kamloops

Apart from packing the clothes, camping gear, and enough toys to keep baby busy for a few miles into the journey, there’s the snacks.

I’m trying to eat well, a balance diet of plenty of lean protein, not to many carbs and little-to-no refined sugar. This can be really hard when space in the car is incredibly limited, and the only stops for refilling the mobile pantry are gas stations.

Thank goodness for jerky. But not just any jerky. I’ve tried lots and some just taste like old shoe leather. Since finding McSweeney’s jerky, I’ve become a bit of a jerky-snob. To be honest, I always considered jerky to be the food of hardened truckers and cowboys. I’m neither. I don’t have a truck and my head is too big for most cowboy hats.

I feel good about eating McSweeney’s though as it’s made from tender strips and made in small batches. It’s naturally smoked, so no nasty liquid smoke additive.

As it’s lean meat, it’s a source of protein, perfect for keeping me fueled without going over my daily limit for carbs.
Probably my favourite reason to choose McSweeney’s is that they’re a Canadian company, sharing the values that make this country so awesome.

I love the fact that we are discovering our country together, sharing memories that will last forever. I also love the fact we are learning something, not heads buried in cellphones/ipads etc. Being together, sharing, learning…having fun, laughing…..it doesn’t get better than that!

My husband and I both put jerky in each other’s stockings last Christmas…however, he got me McSweeny’s and I got him some other brand. Well after tasting each, we now only get McSweeny’s! It’s just so much better!
Our family loves road trips! My husband and I have 4 daughters. We’ve driven across Canada, coast to coast (when we only had 1 daughter), done several Alberta trips, Sea to Sky a couple times and lots of trips to the Interior. Some trips we snack and others we don’t really but it definitely makes it feel more like a road trip when there are good snacks!

Oh, and we love them because we get to see so many interesting things (wildlife, waterfalls, tunnels, mountains, etc.) and we learn so much (hello rest stops at points of interests! Love those info signs). We also really love the time we get together and the memories we create.

Its just my gf and I on road trips, no kids to bring with us. We do however enjoy road trips to many various locations. Singing all our favourite songs helps the miles just melt away. The trips are always filled with fun and laughter.

It gets us out of the house, away from all the electronics and we et to have real chats 🙂 We always seem to come across the most random things on our roadtrips and we truly have such a great time together. We did a roadtrip a few years back from Toronto to New Orleans and it will forever be some of my best memories with them 🙂

My girls have always been fantastic on road trips. It allows all of us to spend more time together making memories! Our best road trip – we flew to Vancouver from TO, rented a car, spent 3 days in Victoria exploring, back to Vancouver for 2 days and then on to Kelowna for 4 days.
Growing up we drove from TO to BC 2x even traveling back thru the US over 7 days, Florida many times and myself I’ve driven to BC once, Quebec a few times and to Boston once. 🙂

I love them because you have a captive audience! Where are they going to go? You can carry on a conversation and unless they feign sleep, they are obliged to answer. Especially when you are travelling the unbeaten path and the road less traveled! If you are the one holding the McSweeny’s Jerky, its a case of speak to me in more than one word sentences, or I will eat the bag myself!

Road-tripping with the family is the best, these memories will last a life-time. Nothing like sharing memories down the road of some of the best & worst road trips taken as a family. Tons of great snacks, swimming pools at your lodging, great adventures to be had by all family memebers.

    Thanks for the chance @socialdad.ca
